Mixing is a skill that takes time and practice to develop. With enough experience, you will know instinctively what to do in any given situation. However, it is always best to have some guidance when starting out. This article discusses 5 things that you should keep in mind when starting your mix:

  1. Get the levels right - It's important to set the levels of each track so they are equal with one another. A good way of doing this is by using an automated plugin or bringing up all tracks until they are at 0db (decibels relative to full scale).

  2. Use EQ on every channel - The next step will be making sure that no channels are overloading or under-utilized through the use of EQ. You can do this by cutting away unwanted frequencies on each track, or boosting the ones that are needed for a particular sound to stand out in the mix.

  3. Pan each track to the correct position - Panning is an important step in mixing since it allows you to place sounds where they are most effective. Make sure that all tracks are panned so that there aren'st any empty holes or overlapping frequencies.

  4. Add effects as needed - Once the tracks are in their correct places, it's time to add some effects. This could be anything from a reverb or delay to a compressor or limiter.

  5. The final step is to balance all of these elements and make sure that the mix sounds good from start to finish.

These steps will help get your mix started on the right foot, but remember not to focus too much on the technical side of things. Getting creative with your mix is another important skill that will take time to develop!
